How to Use the Addition & Subtraction Worksheet Generator

  1. Choose the operation — Addition only, Subtraction only, or Mixed for a challenge that keeps students on their toes.
  2. Select the difficulty — Easy (0–10) is ideal for kindergarten and grade 1; Medium (0–20) for grade 2; Hard (0–100) for grades 3 and up.
  3. Enable "No Negative Answers" — when checked, all subtraction problems are guaranteed to have answers ≥ 0, which is essential for younger students.
  4. Set the number of problems and pages — 30 problems over 2 pages is a popular homework or quiz format.
  5. Download the PDF — includes an optional answer key on a separate page for quick marking.

Addition and Subtraction Fact Fluency

Fact fluency — knowing basic addition and subtraction facts automatically without counting on fingers — is a foundational maths skill. Students who achieve fluency by the end of grade 2 are significantly better prepared for multiplication, division, and multi-step word problems.

Kindergarten

Focus on sums to 10. Use Easy mode with Addition only and 20 problems per page.

Grade 1–2

Sums to 20, introduce subtraction. Use Medium difficulty with Mixed operation and the No Negative Answers option.

Grade 3+

Multi-digit addition and subtraction to 100. Use Hard mode to challenge students who have mastered basic facts.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "No Negative Answers" do?

When enabled, any subtraction problem where the second number is larger than the first will have the two numbers swapped, so the answer is always zero or positive. This is appropriate for all grade levels that haven't yet learned negative numbers.

Can I mix addition and subtraction on the same sheet?

Yes — select "Mixed (addition & subtraction)" and the generator will randomly include both operation types. Each problem clearly shows either a + or − symbol.

How is the custom range different from the difficulty presets?

The Custom option lets you set any minimum and maximum value. For example, you could practice only facts involving numbers from 15 to 30, which is useful for targeting specific gaps in student knowledge.

Is the format suitable for Common Core?

Yes. The worksheet format (columnar problems, answer blank below or to the right) aligns with standard maths worksheet conventions used in Common Core and most other curricula worldwide.
