Handwriting Worksheets Generator

Create custom printable handwriting practice worksheets for kids in kindergarten through 2nd grade. Type any words, sentences, or letters — the generator creates a dotted trace row and blank practice rows for each line of text. Download as a print-ready PDF.

Worksheet Settings

Each line of text becomes one trace row followed by blank practice lines.

How to Use the Handwriting Worksheet Generator

  1. Enter your practice text — type any words, sentences, or letter sequences. Each line of text you enter becomes one trace row on the worksheet.
  2. Use a quick preset — choose from the alphabet (upper/lower/both), numbers, days of the week, months, or classic pangrams that contain every letter.
  3. Choose a line style — Standard lines (baseline + midline) work for most students. Four-line style adds a top line and descender guide for more structured practice. Wide ruled suits students who write large.
  4. Set practice rows — each traced line can be followed by 1, 2, or 3 blank rows for students to practise on their own.
  5. Select letter size — Large is best for kindergarten, Medium for grade 1–2, and Small for grade 2–3 as fine motor skills develop.

Handwriting Practice Ideas for Teachers

Personalised Name Practice

Create a worksheet with a student's first and last name. This is one of the first and most motivating writing tasks for kindergarteners.

Sight Word Drills

Enter Dolch or Fry sight words one per line. Repeated tracing and copying builds both reading recognition and writing fluency simultaneously.

Spelling List Practice

Paste this week's spelling list into the text box. Students trace the word once, then write it independently two more times.

Alphabet Tracing

Use the "Both Cases" preset to generate a full Aa–Zz tracing sheet, ideal for early kindergarten or students who need letter formation support.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the dotted trace style?

When "Show dotted trace text" is enabled, each line of your text is printed in light blue as a model for students to trace over before practising on their own on the blank lines below.

What is the difference between line styles?

Standard lines show a solid baseline and a dashed midline (where lowercase letters reach). Four-line style adds a top line (for tall letters like b, d, h) and a descender line (for letters like g, p, y). Wide ruled omits the midline for students who find it distracting.

How many lines fit on one page?

This depends on letter size and number of practice rows. With Medium size and 2 practice rows per line, roughly 6–8 text lines fit per page. The generator automatically adds new PDF pages as needed for longer text.

Can I practice cursive writing with this tool?

The traced letters use a standard print font. The guide lines (especially the four-line style) are compatible with cursive practice if students write in cursive on the blank rows below.
