How to Use the Fraction Worksheet Generator

  1. Choose the operation — Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Division, or Mixed. For students new to fractions, start with Addition only.
  2. Select the fraction type — Proper Fractions (numerator smaller than denominator) are the starting point. Improper Fractions and Mixed Numbers are for more advanced students.
  3. Pick a difficulty — Easy uses denominators 2–6 (halves, thirds, quarters, fifths, sixths); Medium goes up to 12; Hard up to 20.
  4. Toggle "Like Denominators Only" — when checked, both fractions in a problem will share the same denominator. This is the first step in learning fraction addition/subtraction.
  5. Download the PDF — fractions are drawn with a proper horizontal fraction bar (not a slash), matching the standard classroom notation.

Teaching Fractions by Grade Level

Grade 3

Introduce fractions as parts of a whole. Use Addition with Like Denominators and Easy difficulty. Focus on halves, thirds, and quarters.

Grade 4

Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators. Introduce equivalent fractions. Use Medium difficulty without the Like Denominators restriction.

Grade 5

Multiply and divide fractions. Introduce mixed numbers. Use Multiplication and Division operations with Medium or Hard difficulty.

Grade 6

All operations with mixed numbers and improper fractions. Use Mixed Operations with Hard difficulty for comprehensive review.

Fraction Rules Quick Reference

Addition & Subtraction

Find a common denominator, convert both fractions, then add or subtract the numerators. Simplify the result by dividing numerator and denominator by their greatest common factor.

Multiplication

Multiply numerator × numerator and denominator × denominator. No need to find a common denominator. Always simplify the result.

Division

Keep the first fraction, change ÷ to ×, and flip the second fraction (take its reciprocal). Then multiply as normal.

Mixed Numbers

Convert mixed numbers to improper fractions before performing any operation. Convert the answer back to a mixed number and simplify.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are answers automatically simplified?

Yes. The answer key always shows the fully simplified (reduced) form. For example, 4/8 will be shown as 1/2.

How are fractions displayed in the PDF?

Fractions use a horizontal bar with the numerator above and denominator below — the standard notation used in textbooks, not the diagonal slash (1/2) used in plain text.

What does "Like Denominators Only" mean?

Both fractions in each problem will have the same bottom number. For example, 2/5 + 1/5 instead of 2/5 + 1/3. This is the first step students learn before tackling unlike denominators.
