How to Use the Number Line Worksheet Generator

  1. Set the range — enter a Start number, End number, and Interval (step size). Use the quick presets for the most common classroom ranges.
  2. Choose the worksheet type — Blank lines for students to fill in all numbers, Filled lines as a reference or assessment aid, Fill-in-missing for partially completed lines, or Locate-the-number for plotting practice.
  3. Set lines per page — 4 number lines per page is the most common format. Choose 3 for more working space or 6 for compact drill sheets.
  4. Download the PDF — number lines include arrow heads on both ends and clean tick marks at every interval.

Number Line Worksheet Types Explained

Blank Number Lines

Only the start and end values are labelled. Students write all the missing values at each tick mark. Great for assessing whether students understand counting sequences and skip-counting.

Filled Number Lines

All values are labelled. Use as a reference tool, a visual aid for addition and subtraction, or a starting point for a lesson on number patterns.

Fill in Missing Numbers

Some values are hidden with blank boxes for students to fill in. The answer key shows all the correct values. Ideal for testing knowledge of counting sequences and number patterns.

Locate the Number

A set of numbers is listed above a filled number line. Students must find and mark each number's position with a dot. Builds understanding of number placement and magnitude.

Number Line Uses by Grade

K–1

Counting to 10 and 20. Use 0–10 and 0–20 presets with Blank or Filled type to build number sense and counting fluency.

Grade 2

Skip-counting by 2s, 5s, and 10s. Use 0–100 with interval 2, 5, or 10. Fill-in-missing type works well for skip-counting practice.

Grade 3

Introduction to negative numbers and fractions on a number line. Use −10 to 10 preset or a 0–1 range with interval 0.25 for fraction placement.

Grade 4–5

Larger ranges and decimals. Use 0–1000 by hundreds, or set custom ranges for decimals and negative number operations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I create a number line with decimals or negative numbers?

Yes. The Start and End fields accept any number, including negatives (e.g. −10 to 10) and decimals. The Interval also supports decimals — try 0.25 for a quarter-step number line from 0 to 5.

How many tick marks can fit on one number line?

Up to 100 tick marks are supported. For clarity and readability, we recommend no more than 20–25 ticks per line. If your range produces more than that, increase the interval.

Does the answer key work for all worksheet types?

The answer key is most useful for the "Fill in missing numbers" type, where it lists the hidden values for each line. For "Blank" type, the answer key shows the full sequence of numbers.
