What Is the Versatiles System?
Versatiles is a hands-on manipulative system created by Hand 2 Mind that gives students an independent, self-checking way to practice math and language arts skills. The system uses 12 double-sided tiles — numbered 1 through 12 and color-coded yellow, blue, or red — that students arrange inside a plastic tile case. Teachers create activities by writing or printing numbered answer choices, then building a specific tile arrangement that reveals the correct answers when students flip the case over and compare it to the answer key.
Because the system is self-correcting, students can work through an activity at their own pace and immediately know whether their answers are right. Versatiles activities are popular as math or reading centers, early-finisher work, and small-group review. .
How the Versatiles Key Works
When you design an activity, you arrange all 12 tiles in a 6×2 grid — that is your tile arrangement. The key is simply that same grid with its two rows swapped: the bottom row of your tile arrangement becomes the top row of the key, and the top row becomes the bottom row. Students build the same grid independently using their own set of tiles, then flip the case over. If their numbers match the key, their answers are correct.
This tool automates the key-generation step. Arrange tiles in the top grid and the key is built in real time in the bottom grid. Once all 12 tiles are placed, download both grids as PNG images to print or include in your activity materials. If you're building a full lesson around the activity, the Lesson Plan Maker can help you organize everything in one place.
How to Use This Tool
- Select a tile by clicking it in the Available Tiles area — it will highlight with a blue outline.
- Click an empty grid square in the Tile Grid to place the selected tile. The corresponding Key square fills in automatically.
- Alternatively, drag tiles directly from the Available Tiles area onto any empty grid square.
- To move a placed tile, click it in the grid (it returns to your hand as selected), then click a new square.
- Dropping a tile onto an occupied square swaps the tiles — the existing tile returns to the available pool.
- When all 12 tiles are placed, click Download Grid PNG for the tile arrangement and Download Key PNG for the answer key.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do students need a physical Versatiles set?
Yes — students need a physical tile case and tile set to do the activity in class. This tool is for teachers to create the arrangement and generate the printable key. Physical Versatiles sets are available from Hand 2 Mind.
Why are the rows swapped in the key?
The Versatiles tile case is physical and designed to flip over. When you flip it, the top row physically becomes the bottom row and vice versa. The key shows the numbers where they will land after the flip, so students can compare their result to the key at a glance.
What do the tile colors mean?
The yellow, blue, and red colors help students and teachers quickly sort and identify tiles. The colors themselves don't carry meaning in the answer key — it is the number on each tile that determines whether an answer is correct.
Can I use any arrangement of tiles?
Yes. Any arrangement of all 12 tiles across the 6×2 grid is valid. The order you choose maps each numbered tile to a specific question or answer slot in your activity. You design the activity questions to match whichever arrangement you decide on.
Are the PNG images high enough resolution to print?
The downloaded images are generated at 124 px per cell, making the full grid 744×252 pixels. For typical classroom printing at standard sizes (letter paper), this is sufficient. For very large prints, consider scaling up in a photo editor before printing.
Is my data uploaded anywhere?
No. Everything runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to any server. If you close or refresh the page, the current arrangement will be lost — download your images before you leave.
