How to Use a Multiplication Chart

To find the answer to any multiplication fact, locate the first number in the top header row and the second number in the left header column. The cell where that row and column intersect contains the product.

For example: to find 7 × 8, find 7 in the top row and trace down to the row starting with 8. The answer is 56.

Tips for Teaching Multiplication Facts

Start with patterns

The 2s, 5s, and 10s follow obvious patterns and are the easiest starting point. Once students see the patterns, they build confidence to tackle harder facts.

Use skip counting

Counting by 3s, 4s, 6s, 7s, 8s, and 9s aloud builds the rhythmic memory that makes fact fluency automatic. The chart shows the full skip-counting sequence in every row.

Highlight the commutative property

The chart is symmetrical across the diagonal. Pointing this out shows students that 6×8 and 8×6 are the same — cutting the number of facts to memorize roughly in half.

Use the blank chart version for quizzes

Toggle the Blank Chart option to generate a fill-in version. Students complete the chart from memory as a diagnostic or timed fluency check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes are available?

The chart can be generated from any starting value (0–19) up to any ending value (1–20). The most common size is a standard 1–12 chart.

Will it fit on one page?

Charts up to 12×12 fit comfortably on a single US letter page. Larger charts (up to 20×20) will use a smaller cell size to remain on one page.

Can I print a blank chart for students to fill in?

Yes — check the Blank Chart option. The header row and column remain filled in; only the product cells are left blank.

Pair the chart with printable Multiplication Worksheets and Division Worksheets for a complete math fact fluency program.
