Timeline Maker
Build a printable timeline for history projects, biography reports, science unit reviews, or any sequence of events. Add events with dates and descriptions, reorder them, and download a clean printable PDF. The timeline sorts events automatically or you can arrange them manually. For deeper project organization, the essay outline generator helps structure the written component of a history project, and the book report template works well when the timeline accompanies a biography report.

Using Timelines in School Projects
Timelines are one of the most versatile graphic organizers in a student's toolkit. They can be used in nearly every subject area:
- History and Social Studies — map the causes and effects of wars, revolutions, or political movements; track the life of a historical figure; show the sequence of events in a particular era.
- Science — sequence the steps of a scientific process; show the history of scientific discoveries; map geological eras or the stages of an experiment.
- English and Language Arts — plot the events of a novel in order; track a character's development throughout a story; organize the sequence of a narrative essay.
- Biographies and Book Reports — a timeline of a subject's life is a natural complement to a biography or book report. The book report template includes a section for key life events that pairs well with a printed timeline.
Tips for an Effective Timeline
- Keep date formats consistent — pick either years only (1939), years with months (September 1939), or full dates (September 1, 1939) and stick to one throughout.
- Limit descriptions to 1–2 sentences so the timeline remains readable when printed.
- Aim for 6–12 events on a single-page timeline. Fewer than 5 makes the timeline thin; more than 15 requires multiple pages to stay legible.
- Color-coding events by category (political, military, economic, social) can make complex timelines much easier to read at a glance.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many events can I add?
You can add up to 20 events. For timelines with more than 12 events, the PDF generator will automatically flow onto a second page to keep text readable. If you need to present more than 20 events, consider breaking them into separate themed timelines (e.g., political events on one, economic events on another).
Can I use BCE / BC dates?
Yes — type the date as you would naturally write it, like "753 BCE" or "44 BC". The auto-sort feature reads numeric values from dates, so for BCE dates to sort correctly, you may want to disable auto-sort and drag events into the correct order manually.
What format should dates be in?
Any plain text format works — the date is displayed exactly as you type it. Common formats include a year (1969), a month and year (July 1969), a full date (July 20, 1969), or a date range (1939–1945). Consistency within a single timeline looks most professional.
Can I print the timeline horizontally?
The PDF is generated in landscape orientation, which is the natural format for a horizontal timeline. The timeline line runs left to right across the page, with events stacked above and below it for visual clarity.
Can teachers use this to create timelines for the whole class?
Absolutely — teachers can build a completed reference timeline and print it for the class, or create a partially filled timeline as a graphic organizer for students to complete. For a blank timeline template where students fill in their own events, simply add placeholder entries with blank descriptions.
