Student Group Generator

Quickly divide your class into random groups for activities, projects, or discussions. Enter your student roster, set the group size or number of groups, and generate balanced teams in one click. If you also need a new seating arrangement, the Seating Chart Generator can randomize your whole classroom layout. For recurring classroom responsibilities instead of one-time activity groups, try the Classroom Jobs Chart Generator.

How to Use the Student Group Generator

  1. Enter your student roster — one name per line — in the text box above. You can copy and paste directly from a spreadsheet.
  2. Choose whether to group by Students per Group (set a group size, e.g., 4) or Number of Groups (set a target like 6 groups).
  3. Set how to handle extra students: distribute them into existing groups or put them in their own group.
  4. Click Generate Groups. Click Shuffle Again to get a new random arrangement from the same roster.
  5. Click Download PDF to save a printable PDF of the group assignments.

Tips for Random Grouping

Use random groups for review activities

Random grouping is ideal for review games, Socratic seminars, or activities where mixing social circles is beneficial. It prevents cliques and exposes students to different perspectives.

Save rosters between uses

Keep your student list in a plain text file (one name per line) so you can paste it quickly whenever you need new groups. The tool doesn't save data between sessions.

Use group size or count strategically

For activities requiring specific roles (e.g., researcher, writer, presenter), use Students per Group of 3. For debates or panel discussions, use Number of Groups to set a specific number of teams.

Shuffle again if needed

If a grouping creates an obvious imbalance you noticed (all the same friends together), click Shuffle Again for a fresh arrangement without re-entering any names.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many students can I include?

There is no hard limit — the tool works for any class size. For very large groups (100+ students), the PDF may span multiple columns.

Does the tool save my class roster?

No — names are only kept during the current browser session. Paste your roster each time you use the tool, or keep it saved in a notes app for quick access.

Can I use this for pair work (groups of 2)?

Yes — set Students per Group to 2 for random pair assignments. This is great for think-pair-share activities or peer editing sessions.

Also useful: the Seating Chart Generator for randomizing your classroom layout, and the Bingo Card Generator for group review games.
