Need to know how many sentences are in a block of text? Maybe you're writing a paper for school and have a minimum? Maybe you're just curious. Either way, enter in your text in the box above either by typing, uploading, or pasting and this tool will automatically count the number of sentences and words in your text.
Under the text area above you should see a pair of icons that will let you either paste in text or upload from a file on your computer.
And, hopefully you aren't getting graded on the number of sentences in what you write because that's not really a good metric for a teacher to use. But, just in case this sentence counter is here for you.
As you enter text the tool looks for puncutation. It assumes that a sentence ends with a period, exclamation point, or question mark. Behind the scenes it separates your text on those 3 characters and counts the number of sentences it finds. Since the tool is already going through your text counting sentences it also counts words at the same time. It does this by assuming that there is one or more spaces between each word and splitting up your text, similar to what it does to count sentences.
It also counts the last sentence whether you end it with punctuation or not.
And, if the split between two punctuation characters doesn't contain anything it's not counted. For example, hello... there would only count as 2 sentences, hello. and there. The middle .. would not be counted.
