Running Pace Calculator

Use this calculator three ways: find your pace from a distance and time, calculate finish time from a pace and distance, or find the distance you covered from a pace and time. Supports both miles and kilometers.

Understanding Running Pace

Running pace is the amount of time it takes to cover a single unit of distance — typically expressed as minutes per mile in the United States, or minutes per kilometer in most other countries. It is the inverse of speed (which is distance per unit time).

The relationship between pace, time, and distance is:

  • Pace = Total Time ÷ Distance
  • Finish Time = Pace × Distance
  • Distance = Total Time ÷ Pace

What Is a Good Running Pace?

There is no universal "good" pace — it depends heavily on age, fitness level, terrain, and goal race distance. As a general reference:

  • Beginner runner: 12–15 min/mile (7:28–9:19 min/km)
  • Average recreational runner: 9–11 min/mile (5:35–6:50 min/km)
  • Intermediate: 7–9 min/mile (4:20–5:35 min/km)
  • Advanced/competitive: Under 7 min/mile (under 4:20 min/km)
  • Elite marathoner: Around 4:35 min/mile (2:51 min/km)

Pacing Strategy for Races

Most experienced racers recommend an even pace strategy or a slight negative split (running the second half slightly faster than the first). Starting too fast — called positive splitting — is one of the most common mistakes in longer races, as it leads to glycogen depletion and a difficult second half.

A simple approach is to calculate your goal finish-time pace using this tool, then aim to run every mile or kilometer within 10–15 seconds of that target.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a 5K pace in min/mile if I want to finish in 30 minutes?

A 30-minute 5K (3.107 miles) requires a pace of 30 ÷ 3.107 = 9:40 per mile (or 6:00 per km). Enter those numbers into the "Find Pace" tab above to confirm.

What is a 4-hour marathon pace?

A 4-hour (240-minute) marathon over 26.219 miles requires a pace of 240 ÷ 26.219 = approximately 9:09 per mile (or 5:41 per km).

How does speed relate to pace?

Speed (mph or km/h) and pace (min/mile or min/km) are reciprocals. Speed = 60 ÷ Pace (in min/mile). A 10:00/mile pace equals a speed of 6.0 mph; a 6:00/mile pace equals 10.0 mph.
