Why Convert PNG to AVIF?
PNG files are lossless, which means they can be very large — especially for photos. AVIF provides a compelling alternative:
- Dramatically smaller files — AVIF can be 50–80% smaller than an equivalent PNG, especially for photographic content.
- Transparency support — AVIF supports an alpha channel, so transparent PNGs convert cleanly with no background fill.
- Better for the web — AVIF files load faster, saving bandwidth for your visitors and improving Core Web Vitals scores.
For logos, icons, and illustrations with transparency, AVIF is an excellent replacement for PNG on supported browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari 16+).
Browser Requirements
AVIF encoding requires Chrome 93+ or Firefox 93+. Safari supports displaying AVIF images but does not support encoding them via the Canvas API. Use Chrome or Firefox to run this tool.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will transparency be preserved when converting PNG to AVIF? Yes. AVIF supports an alpha channel. If your PNG has a transparent background, it will remain transparent in the AVIF output.
Will I lose quality compared to the original PNG? PNG is lossless and AVIF is lossy (at quality settings below 100%). At High (85%) quality the difference is negligible for most images. For text-heavy screenshots you may prefer to keep PNG.
Are my files uploaded anywhere? No. Conversion runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.
