When to Convert PDF to Images
Converting PDF pages to JPG images is useful in many scenarios:
- Thumbnails and previews — generate page thumbnails to display in a web gallery or document management system
- Social media sharing — JPG images can be posted directly; PDFs cannot
- Presentations — embed specific pages as images in PowerPoint or Google Slides
- Non-editable sharing — images cannot be easily edited, which is useful when sharing content you want to protect from modification
- Compatibility — some applications accept images but not PDFs; converting first removes the dependency
Resolution Guide
The DPI (dots per inch) setting controls the output image size and sharpness:
| DPI | Typical Use | Approx. size of A4 page |
|---|---|---|
| 72 | Screen display, thumbnails | ~595 × 842 px |
| 96 | Standard screen | ~794 × 1123 px |
| 150 | Good quality screen and web | ~1240 × 1754 px |
| 200 | High quality, small print | ~1654 × 2339 px |
| 300 | Print-ready, archival | ~2480 × 3508 px |
Higher DPI produces larger files and takes longer to convert. For most web use cases, 150 dpi at 90% JPG quality is a good balance.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will the images look exactly like the PDF? For most PDFs, yes. The conversion renders each page exactly as the PDF viewer would display it. Complex PDFs with unusual fonts or transparency may render with minor differences.
Can I convert only specific pages? Yes — use the "Custom range" option to specify a start and end page number. Use "First page only" to quickly extract a cover image.
Why are the output files large? Higher DPI settings produce larger image files. Try reducing DPI to 96–150 for web-friendly sizes. Lowering JPG quality from 90% to 75% also significantly reduces file size with minimal visible quality change.
Does this tool support PDF/A or other PDF subtypes? Yes. Any well-formed PDF file is supported, including PDF/A, PDF/X, and PDF/UA variants.
Is my file uploaded to any server? No. This tool runs entirely in your browser — your PDF is never sent to our servers or to any third party. All processing happens locally on your device using JavaScript. You can confirm this by opening your browser's network panel while using the tool and observing that no file data leaves your machine.
