Why Rotate PDF Pages?

Scanned documents are a common source of rotation issues. If a page was placed in the scanner sideways or upside-down, it appears rotated in the PDF. Rather than re-scanning the entire document, you can fix individual pages using this tool.

Other common reasons to rotate PDF pages include:

  • Mixed orientation documents — a report where most pages are portrait but some diagrams are in landscape
  • Incorrectly exported PDFs — software that exports PDFs sometimes gets the rotation metadata wrong
  • Correcting screenshots — screenshots or camera photos turned into PDFs may have EXIF rotation that wasn't applied before conversion

Rotation in PDF Files

PDF rotation is stored as metadata on each page — the page content itself is not physically re-encoded. The rotation value tells PDF viewers how many degrees clockwise to rotate the content before displaying it. Valid values are 0, 90, 180, and 270 degrees.

This tool applies cumulative rotation: if a page already has a stored rotation of 90° and you rotate it another 90°, the output page will have a stored rotation of 180°. The displayed thumbnail reflects the final rotation.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does rotating change the actual page content?
No. PDF rotation is stored as a metadata field. The underlying content stream is unchanged — only the rotation value on each page object is updated. This is lossless and instantaneous.

Can I rotate just one page in a large document?
Yes. Each page card has individual rotation buttons. Click ↻ 90°, ↻ 180°, or ↻ 270° on just the pages you want to change.

What if I set the wrong rotation?
The thumbnails update in real time as you click rotation buttons, so you can see the result before downloading. Click "↺ Reset all" to clear all rotations back to the original, or click the rotation buttons on individual pages to adjust.

Why are some pages not showing thumbnails?
Thumbnail rendering uses pdf.js in the browser. Complex pages with unusual fonts or content streams may take a moment to render. Very large PDFs may skip thumbnails for performance — the rotation is still applied correctly regardless.
