PDF metadata is information stored about the document, separate from its content. It is embedded in the PDF file using the Document Information Dictionary and, in newer PDFs, XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) data.
The standard metadata fields are:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Title | The title of the document (not necessarily the filename) |
| Author | The name of the person or organisation who created the document |
| Subject | A brief description of the document's topic |
| Keywords | Search keywords associated with the document |
| Creator | The application that originally created the document (e.g. Microsoft Word) |
| Producer | The software that converted or wrote the final PDF (e.g. Adobe Acrobat) |
| Created | When the document was first created |
| Modified | When the document was last saved or modified |
Does this change the visible content of the PDF?
No. Metadata is stored separately from the page content. Editing metadata does not change any text, images, or layout in the document.
Why are Creator and Producer not editable?
Creator and Producer fields record which software created and produced the PDF. They are shown here for informational purposes but are not editable fields in this tool, as changing them could mislead document management systems.
Will the new metadata be visible in Windows Explorer or macOS Finder?
Yes — most operating systems read PDF metadata for the Details panel (Windows) or Get Info dialog (macOS). The updated Title and Author will be reflected there after the file is re-saved.
What is XMP metadata?
XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) is an XML-based metadata standard embedded in newer PDFs alongside the classic Document Information Dictionary. This tool updates the Document Information Dictionary; XMP may also be present but is not separately modified.
