Writing Effective LinkedIn Posts
LinkedIn's algorithm rewards posts that generate engagement — likes, comments, and shares — in the first 60–90 minutes after publishing. The structure of your post has a direct impact on whether people engage or scroll past.
The Hook
Only the first 2–3 lines of a post are visible before the "see more" prompt. This is your hook — and it's the most important part. A strong hook creates curiosity, challenges a belief, or makes a bold statement that compels the reader to click "see more." Weak hooks that start with "I am excited to share…" or "Happy to announce…" rarely perform well.
Line Breaks and Readability
LinkedIn preserves line breaks exactly as you type them. Use single line breaks to separate ideas within a thought, and double line breaks (blank line) between paragraphs. Long unbroken blocks of text are difficult to read on mobile and reduce engagement. Most high-performing LinkedIn posts use very short paragraphs — often 1–3 lines each.
The Call to Action
End your post with a specific question or call to action. "What do you think?" is too vague. "Have you ever had this happen at work? Share your story below." is much better. Comments are the strongest engagement signal on LinkedIn and dramatically increase reach.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why doesn't LinkedIn show my line breaks when I paste text?
LinkedIn sometimes strips multiple consecutive blank lines down to one. It also truncates trailing whitespace. This tool formats text using single and double newlines, which LinkedIn handles correctly. If you notice blank lines disappearing, try reducing consecutive empty lines to one.
How many hashtags should I use?
LinkedIn recommends 3–5 relevant hashtags per post. More than that can signal spam to the algorithm. Place hashtags at the end of the post rather than inline within the text.
When is the best time to post on LinkedIn?
Most studies find that LinkedIn posts receive the most engagement on Tuesday through Thursday, between 9 AM and 12 PM in the poster's local time zone. Engagement drops significantly on weekends, as LinkedIn is primarily a professional network used during work hours.
Does LinkedIn penalize external links?
LinkedIn's algorithm gives reduced distribution to posts that contain external links (links that take users off LinkedIn). A common workaround is to post without the link, then add the link in the first comment. This retains the algorithm boost while still providing the link to interested readers.
