What Is ITF-14?

"ITF" stands for Interleaved 2 of 5 — a dense, numeric-only barcode format where digits are encoded in pairs, interleaving bars for one digit with spaces for the next. ITF-14 is the GS1 standard built on top of that format for encoding a 14-digit GTIN (Global Trade Item Number) at the shipping-case or pallet level. That's a step up from the shorter codes used on individual retail items — UPC-A (12 digits) or EAN-13 (13 digits) — since a carton typically holds many units and needs its own distinct case-level identifier.

Where the 14 Digits Come From
