How to Crop an Image Online

After uploading your image, a crop selection box appears over the canvas. You can:

  • Move the crop box — Click and drag anywhere inside the box to reposition it.
  • Resize the crop box — Drag any of the eight handles (corners and edge midpoints) to resize the selection.
  • Lock an aspect ratio — Choose a preset ratio from the dropdown and the box will maintain those proportions as you resize.
  • Crop and download — Click the "Crop & Download" button to save the selected area as a new image.

If you also need to resize the canvas itself — for example to add letterboxing or padding — the Image Canvas Resizer handles that use case. For adding text or logo overlays before cropping, see the Image Watermark Tool.

Common Aspect Ratios

  • 1:1 Square — Instagram profile posts, product thumbnails, avatar photos.
  • 16:9 Widescreen — YouTube thumbnails, desktop wallpapers, banner images.
  • 9:16 Portrait — Instagram Stories, TikTok, YouTube Shorts.
  • 4:3 — Traditional TV and monitor format, many camera sensor defaults.
  • 3:2 — DSLR and mirrorless camera sensor native ratio (35mm film).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my image uploaded to a server?

No. The image is processed entirely using the browser's Canvas API on your device. Nothing is sent to any server.

Will cropping reduce image quality?

Cropping itself does not recompress the image — only the selected pixels are drawn to a new canvas. However, saving as JPG will apply lossy compression. Choose PNG if you need to preserve every pixel exactly, or WebP for a smaller lossless-or-lossy result.

Can I crop animated GIFs?

The tool will load and crop the first frame of a GIF as a static image. It does not preserve animation. For animated GIF editing you would need a dedicated GIF editor.

What is the maximum image size I can crop?

There is no enforced file size limit — it depends on your device's available memory. Very large images (over 30 megapixels) may be slow to process on older hardware. The canvas is scaled down for display but the crop is applied at the original full resolution.

Why is my crop area showing in the wrong position after I change the aspect ratio?

When you change the aspect ratio, the crop box resets to the centre of the image to guarantee a valid starting position with the new ratio. Drag the handles to fine-tune the selection after choosing a ratio.
