Ideal Weight Calculator
"Ideal weight" is not a single number — it depends on the formula used, your frame size, muscle mass, and individual health factors. This calculator runs all four widely-used medical formulas and shows you the range they produce. For additional context, compare your result with your BMI and body fat percentage.
The Four Formulas Explained
All four formulas start from a base weight for 5 feet of height, then add a fixed amount per inch above (or subtract below) 5 feet.
| Formula | Base (M / F) | Per inch above 5' (M / F) | Year |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hamwi | 106 / 100 lbs | +6 / +5 lbs | 1964 |
| Devine | 110 / 100 lbs | +5 / +5 lbs | 1974 |
| Robinson | 114.4 / 108.8 lbs | +5.1 / +4.4 lbs | 1983 |
| Miller | 124.4 / 116.4 lbs | +5.3 / +4.6 lbs | 1983 |
None of these formulas accounts for muscle mass, frame size, or ethnicity — which is why the range matters more than any single number. Athletes and heavily muscled individuals typically have a healthy weight above these estimates.
Why There's No Single "Ideal" Weight
These formulas were originally developed for pharmaceutical dosing, not as personal fitness targets. A better approach is to identify a weight range associated with good metabolic markers — blood pressure, blood glucose, cholesterol — rather than a single number on a scale. Pair this calculator with your TDEE calculator to estimate what calorie intake is needed to reach or maintain a target weight.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which formula should I use? The Devine formula is most commonly used in clinical settings (especially for medication dosing). The Hamwi formula is popular in dietetics. If your results are spread widely, use the consensus range as a practical target window.
What if I'm shorter than 5 feet? The formulas subtract weight per inch below 5 feet using the same per-inch rate. Results can be less reliable for heights below 4'10".
Does frame size matter? Yes. People with large frames (wide wrists, broad shoulders) typically have a healthy weight 10% above these estimates. Small frames may be 10% below. A healthcare provider can assess frame size.
