GIF to AVIF Converter

Convert GIF images to AVIF — dramatically reducing file sizes while massively improving colour quality. AVIF supports millions of colours compared to GIF's 256, making it ideal for replacing legacy GIF images on modern websites. All processing is done locally in your browser.

How to Use

  1. Upload your GIF files — drag and drop or click to select one or more .gif images.
  2. Choose a quality level — High (85%) gives excellent results with very small output files.
  3. Convert — click Convert All or convert each file individually.
  4. Download — save each AVIF file or use Download All as ZIP.

Why Replace GIF with AVIF?

GIF is a 1980s format that has serious limitations by modern standards. AVIF is a significant upgrade:

  • Colour depth — GIF supports only 256 colours. AVIF supports the full 16-million-colour spectrum.
  • File size — AVIF files are typically 80–95% smaller than equivalent GIFs.
  • Transparency — GIF only supports binary transparency (fully on or off). AVIF supports smooth alpha transparency.
  • Quality — No colour banding or dithering artefacts.

If you are serving GIF images for static graphics, logos, or screenshots on a modern website, replacing them with AVIF will dramatically improve your page load times.

Browser Requirements

AVIF encoding requires Chrome 93+ or Firefox 93+. Safari supports displaying AVIF images but does not support encoding them via the Canvas API. Use Chrome or Firefox to run this tool.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens with animated GIFs?
Only the first frame is exported to AVIF. AVIF itself supports animation, but the browser Canvas API does not expose individual frames of an animated GIF. If you need an animated output, you would need a server-side conversion tool.

Will the transparent areas of my GIF be preserved?
Partially. GIF uses binary transparency (a pixel is either fully transparent or not). When drawn to a canvas, this is preserved as an alpha channel in the AVIF output.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. All conversion happens in your browser using the Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.
