Words & Clues

Enter each word and its clue. Words should be letters only (no spaces or punctuation). Minimum 3 words.

How to Build a Crossword Puzzle

  1. Add your words: Enter each word and the clue that players will use to guess it. Words should be letters only — no spaces or hyphens.
  2. Click Build Puzzle: The generator lays out the words on a grid, intersecting them wherever they share letters. The longest words are placed first.
  3. Check the preview: Numbered cells mark the start of each answer. Across and Down clue lists appear below the grid.
  4. Toggle the answer key: Use the "Show Answer Key" button to verify every answer looks correct before downloading.
  5. Download PDF: The PDF contains two pages — a blank fillable puzzle on page 1 and the complete answer key on page 2.

Tips for Better Puzzles

  • Choose related words: Themed puzzles — animals, capitals, science terms, character names — are more satisfying to solve. Pair this tool with the Word Search Builder for a complete puzzle packet.
  • Vary word lengths: Mix short words (3–5 letters) with longer ones (8–12 letters). Longer words create more crossing opportunities for the layout engine.
  • Write deceptive clues: The best crossword clues are grammatically accurate but misdirecting. A clue like "Run in the sun" could be SPRINT or TAN.
  • Check letter overlap: If a word can't be placed, it shares no letters with any word already on the grid. Try replacing it with a word that overlaps more.
  • Keep word count manageable: 8–20 words makes a satisfying puzzle. Fewer than 5 words produces a very sparse grid; more than 30 can slow placement.
  • Use the answer key page: Print both pages of the PDF — give solvers the puzzle page and keep the answer key separate for checking answers.

Uses for Custom Crosswords

  • Classroom vocabulary review: Build a crossword from this week's spelling or vocabulary list. Students practice recall while having fun. The printable PDF works as a take-home assignment or in-class warm-up activity.
  • Training and onboarding: Corporate trainers use custom crosswords to reinforce terminology, product names, and key concepts during onboarding sessions.
  • Party and event games: Build a themed puzzle around a guest of honor's interests, a couple's relationship timeline, or an organization's history for a memorable activity. The Bingo Card Generator makes a good companion — same theme, different game.
  • Newsletter and bulletin inserts: Church bulletins, school newsletters, and community papers regularly include simple puzzles. A custom crossword themed to current events or the season adds a personal touch.
  • Language learning: ESL teachers and language learners use crosswords to reinforce new vocabulary in context. The clue forces a definition or usage example for every word.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why couldn't some of my words be placed?

Words are placed by intersecting with letters already on the grid. If a word shares no letters with any word currently placed, the engine has nowhere to connect it. Try replacing the problem word with a synonym that shares more letters with your other words.

How does the numbering work?

Cells are numbered in reading order (left to right, top to bottom). A cell receives a number if it starts an Across answer, a Down answer, or both. The same number is shared between the Across and Down answers that start in the same cell.

Can I include multi-word phrases?

The word field accepts letters only. For phrases like "blue whale," enter the word as BLUEWHALE and write the clue as normal. Alternatively, enter each word separately with related clues.

Is the PDF truly printable?

Yes. Both pages of the PDF are formatted for standard US Letter (8.5 × 11 in.) paper. The grid scales automatically to fit the page with clues listed below it.

Can I get a different layout from the same word list?

Yes — click New Layout after building. The engine reshuffles the word order and placement candidates, producing a different grid arrangement without any changes to your words or clues. Download whichever layout you prefer.
