Countdown Timer

Count down to any future date or event — a holiday, birthday, deadline, trip, or product launch. Your countdown is saved automatically in your browser so it persists between visits.

Quick presets:

How to Use the Countdown Timer

  1. Enter an optional event name so you remember what you're counting down to.
  2. Pick a target date using the date picker. Optionally set a specific time (defaults to midnight).
  3. Click Start Countdown. The timer ticks down every second.
  4. Your settings are saved automatically — reload the page and the countdown resumes.
  5. Click Reset to clear the countdown and enter a new target.

Countdown Uses

Countdown timers are useful for a wide range of events:

  • Holidays and celebrations — Christmas, New Year, birthdays, anniversaries
  • Work deadlines — project due dates, proposal submission deadlines
  • School events — exam dates, graduation, end of term. For timed test sessions, try the Classroom Timer.
  • Travel — days until a vacation, trip, or flight
  • Product launches — software releases, pre-orders, event registrations
  • Health goals — days since quitting a habit, streak tracking

How Days Are Calculated

The countdown uses your local system clock and the target date/time you entered. The remaining time is divided into:

  • Days — complete 24-hour periods remaining
  • Hours — remaining hours after full days are subtracted (0–23)
  • Minutes — remaining minutes after hours (0–59)
  • Seconds — remaining seconds after minutes (0–59)

This is the most intuitive display for countdown purposes, as opposed to showing total hours or total minutes. If you need to calculate the number of work days between two dates, see the Work Days Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the countdown keep running when I close the tab?

The timer does not run in the background — JavaScript timers pause when a tab is inactive or closed. However, because the target date is saved in your browser, the displayed value will be fully accurate the next time you open the page, since it re-calculates from the current time.

Can I count down to a specific time, not just a date?

Yes. Use the optional "Target time" field to enter a specific hour and minute. The default is midnight (00:00) at the start of the chosen day.

Where is my countdown stored?

Your countdown target is saved in your browser's localStorage. It is stored only on your device and is never sent to any server. Clearing your browser data will remove it.

What happens when the countdown reaches zero?

The digits all show zero and a "That day has arrived!" message appears. The timer stops counting negative time.

Is there a way to share my countdown with others?

Currently, countdowns are browser-local only. To share an event time with others, consider using a calendar invite (Google Calendar, Outlook, etc.) alongside this tool.
