Splitting the Bill Fairly

The most common approach at a restaurant is to divide the total bill — including tax and tip — equally among everyone at the table. This works well when everyone ordered in a similar price range and no one has dietary restrictions that pushed their cost significantly higher or lower.

When orders vary widely, a custom split often feels fairer. Use the "set custom amounts per person" toggle above to enter individual amounts. The calculator tracks whether the custom total matches the grand total so nothing falls short or gets double-counted.

The tip percentage that feels right has shifted over the years. Many diners now default to 18–20% for sit-down service, with 15% considered the lower end of acceptable for adequate service and 25% or more for exceptional meals. Quick-service counters and coffee shops have no hard rule — the default suggestions on card readers start at 15–20% but tipping at these spots is discretionary. If you want to think through tipping on its own, the Tip Calculator lets you dial in the exact amount before you commit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I split the bill before or after tax?

It is more common to split after tax — most people think of "the bill" as the amount on the check, which already includes tax. Tipping is then calculated on top of that pre-tip total. Splitting before tax and then tipping on the pre-tax amount can produce a slightly lower per-person number, but the difference is usually small and creates confusion. This calculator applies the tip to the bill total you enter, so simply enter the after-tax number from your check.

How do I handle someone who didn't drink alcohol?

If drinks make up a significant portion of the bill and some people ordered none, splitting evenly can feel unfair. The cleanest solution is to ask the server to itemize the check — drinks on one sub-total, food on another — then split each portion among only those who consumed it. Use the custom split option above to enter the resulting individual amounts.

Does everyone need to tip separately?

No — the tip is usually added as one line to the total and then divided. The per-person tip shown by this calculator is already factored into the "each person pays" figure. You only need to add it separately if your group is paying with multiple cards and each person is responsible for their own transaction.

What if the total doesn't divide evenly into cents?

Rounding to the nearest cent is the practical answer. If four people split a $57.36 total, each owes $14.34 — which adds up to $57.36 exactly. When it doesn't work out so cleanly, round one person's share up by a cent. Most payment apps handle this automatically.
