Frequently Asked Questions

Will I lose quality converting AVIF to JPG?
Some quality loss occurs because JPG is a lossy format. At 85% quality the difference is imperceptible for photographs. Use 95% quality if archiving important images.

Are my files uploaded anywhere?
No. This tool uses the browser's built-in AVIF decoder and Canvas API. Your files never leave your device.

Why can't I open AVIF files in some programs?
AVIF is relatively new (standardised in 2019). Older software and operating systems don't include an AVIF decoder. Converting to JPG or PNG is the easiest workaround.
